Eating Well for Good Health
According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, 1 out of every 3 cancers can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle. But what does that mean? Is it spending hours at the gym and eating only salads? No. It is making small choices in your day-to-day activities that result in a healthier you. This will help lower your chances of cancer, obesity, heart disease and diabetes.
Experts recommend a diet full of plant-based foods, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans. These foods tend to provide fewer calories but keep us feeling fuller longer because they are full of fiber and water. They also provide a wide range of vitamins and minerals that our bodies need.
Below are 5 tips for eating well for good health.
- Choose whole grain pasta, bread, and cereal instead of processed grains, such as white bread and white rice.
- Eat at least 2 ½ cups of vegetables and fruits each day. Include vegetables and fruits at every meal and for snacks.
- Limit the amount of processed meat and red meat you eat, such as bacon, sausage, and hot dogs. Choose fish, chicken, or beans instead.
- Eat smaller portions or servings. Servings are often larger in size than they need to be. Try smaller portions at your next meal or snack.
- Limit the amount of sugar-sweetened drinks that you drink, such as soda, sport drinks, and fruit-flavored drinks.
