GERD Surgery – Fundoplication

Relief for Persistent Acid Reflux

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can cause frequent heartburn, regurgitation and other uncomfortable symptoms. While lifestyle changes and medications can help many people manage GERD, some patients may continue to experience symptoms despite treatment.

For patients with persistent or severe GERD, fundoplication surgery may be an option.

What Is Fundoplication?

Fundoplication is a surgical procedure used to treat GERD by strengthening the valve between the esophagus and stomach. During the procedure, the upper portion of the stomach is wrapped around the lower esophagus. This helps prevent stomach acid and food from flowing back into the esophagus.

Fundoplication may be performed using minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopic or robotic-assisted surgery, depending on the patient's individual needs.

Who May Benefit?

Fundoplication may be considered for patients who:

  • Continue to experience significant GERD symptoms despite medication and lifestyle changes

  • Have complications related to chronic acid reflux

  • Prefer a surgical treatment rather than long-term medication

  • Have testing that confirms GERD and are appropriate candidates for surgery
